Mosquitoes are some of the most annoying pests that can make our outdoor experience a living nightmare. Not only are they a nuisance, but they also spread dangerous diseases like malaria and dengue fever, cause allergies, disrupt sleep, and even cause death in extreme cases.
Thankfully, there are a few ways to keep them away from our home and yard without relying on harmful chemical sprays. Here are some of the safest and chemical-free ways to get rid of mosquitoes.
Get rid of standing water: Mosquitoes love to breed in standing water, so the first step to getting rid of them is to remove any standing water around our home. This includes bird baths, pools, puddles, gutters, and anything else that could potentially be a breeding ground. If we can’t drain the water, we must make sure to regularly change it so it doesn’t become a breeding site.
Use neem and lavender oils: These are antibacterial and antifungal. In addition, they are anti-viral as well. They are effective, and they keep mosquitoes away more effectively as compared to any other vaporizers or coils. Lavender oil can effectively repel mosquitoes. Mosquitoes hate this scent. We can keep them away by spraying lavender oil around our house and all surrounding places. In addition to keeping mosquitoes away, it will make our skin feel calm and soothed because it is antiseptic, antifungal, and analgesic. We can add a few drops of lavender oil to an equal amount of neem and apply it to our skin to avoid getting bitten.
Plant tulsi in our room: Tulsi is not only excellent for making tea, but mosquitoes detest it too. Tulsi releases a fragrance, and it repels these insects. So we can plant a tulsi in a pot in our room or at the entry point of our house. It will effectively lower the number of mosquitoes. Thus, planting them around our home or yard is a great way to keep mosquitoes away.
Make a natural repellent: Take a lemon and slice it. Then insert some cloves into the sliced lemon. This is one of the best techniques to keep mosquitoes at bay. If we want a more natural option for repelling mosquitoes, we can try making our DIY mosquito repellent. All we need to do is mix a few drops of an essential oil, such as citronella, lemongrass, or eucalyptus, with some water and spray it around our home and yard.
Prepare a homemade remedy: We can crush some garlic cloves and boil them in water. Do it for some time. Pour this solution into a spray bottle. Squirt it around each room in the house. This can repel mosquitoes for up to two weeks. We can also scatter a few flakes of dry granulated garlic in all problematic areas of our house, like trash cans. Put it in beds and pots. These cloves of garlic will repel them for almost 4 weeks.
Use mosquito nets: Finally, we can also use mosquito nets to keep the mosquitoes away from our homes. Mosquito nets can be placed over windows and doors or even hung from the ceiling. This will block the mosquitoes from entering our home and will also create a protective barrier between us and them.
These are just a few of the safest and chemical-free ways to get rid of mosquitoes. While none of these methods is 100% effective, by following these simple steps, we can reduce the number of mosquitoes around our home and reduce the risk of disease and other health problems. So, the next time we’re having an outdoor gathering, we can try one of these methods to keep those pesky mosquitoes away.
