Movie Review- Crew: A Carefree, Wacky Movie that could have been Better

Nupur Jha

Crew starring Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Kriti Sanon in the lead roles released on March 29, 2024,.

The film is Directed by Rajesh A Krishnan who also directed Kunal Kemmu’s Lootcase , produced by Balaji Motion Pictures and Anil Kapoor Films & Communication Network.

This woman-based comedy heist made headlines as the fifth highest-grossing movie of 2024.

But the big question is: Does Crew live up to its genre or is it just another disappointment like a lot of female-centric movies ?

Here is a spoiler free review and so that you can decide if the movie is worth your time!

Characters, Story & Supportive Cast

Crew centres around three friends, Geeta, Jasmine, and Diviya, who work as cabin crew for Kohinoor Airlines.

Their lives take a downward spiral due to financial difficulties and the looming threat of bankruptcy. While struggling to cope with their situation, they stumble upon an opportunity when one of their colleagues dies on a flight while smuggling gold to another country.

Three friends decide to step in and take over the smuggling idea. However, they soon realise that it’s not just about smuggling gold; but much more than that, which is related to their airlines and to the people.

While the story primarily revolves around the three main leads, it also highlights the life of the airline industry, portraying cabin crew and other staff as important aspects of the storyline.

The characters are well-developed, with clear motives and believable reasons for taking risks. Their decisions are portrayed realistically without trivialising the challenges they face. Also the chemistry and camaraderie between three women was established, while it could be a lot better but it still worked for the story.

Besides the three women, the film has  Kapil Sharma, portraying Tabu’s husband, and Diljit Dosanjh, playing a customs officer romantically interested in Diviya.

While they had more cameo appearances, Rajesh Sharma, Saswata Chatterjee, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Trupti Khamkar contributed to the storyline..

The Bad And What Could Have Been Better?

Unlike previous examples of women-centric movies in the mainstream, Crew shines through with its good storyline and characters that take you on a breezy and carefree ride. It also lacks the typical “wokeness” that you see in many female-centric films these days.

However, the film needed better gags and comedy to generate more laughs, especially considering its genre as a comedy film. Additionally, the storyline had a lot of potential to explore, which could have made the movie even more amazing.

Moreover, the movie could have benefited from cutting a few scenes to focus more on the heist that takes place in the last part of the movie.

Given that the film is actually about a heist, too much time was spent establishing characters and their issues. It needed a more cohesive and tighter screenplay.

Crew is indeed a good attempt and is surely a must-watch if you are looking for a carefree and breezy film. If you’re tired of watching so-called women-centric films that only  focus on sex, drugs, and trash talk, this movie will not disappoint you. The film has its own ups and downs, but overall, it’s a good watch.
