Explore the Witcher 3 Morality Alignment Chart as we dive into the D&D-inspired moral alignments of your favorite Witcher 3 characters.

One of the greatest strengths of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt lies in its characters. It is not a game where you just hunt various kinds of monsters. Unlike many games, movies and stories, where heroes are just heroic and villains are just evil; this world thrives on gray morality. From vampires who follow moral codes to the extreme to kings who kill in the name of order, every major figure in this universe feels layered and real. Most characters aren’t purely good, nor are they entirely wicked. That is exactly why applying the classic morality alignment chart (originally inspired by Dungeons and Dragons) to these characters is both entertaining and thought-provoking.

Before we look at the Witcher 3 morality alignment chart, let us understand how it works. The alignment chart features nine moral categories based on two axes. One axis spans from good to evil, and the other from lawful to chaotic. Here is a quick breakdown:

  • Lawful characters believe in structure, order, honor and social/moral rules. They usually uphold laws and traditions and also focus on their personal discipline. They value stability and predictability, even if the system itself is flawed.

  • Neutral characters focus on practicality and detachment. They don’t reject tradition and structure, but they avoid extreme positions. Either they value balance or because they like to avoid too much of social, legal or moral concerns.

  • Chaotic characters value freedom, emotion, or/and spontaneous action. They usually reject rules, laws, control and authority, often acting on instinct, passion, or a personal sense of justice.

Combined with the good-to-evil scale, this gives us nine unique slots. Let’s now dive into which Witcher 3 characters fit where and why in our Witcher 3 morality alignment chart. (It is also to be remembered that many characters who fit into a certain slot also exhibit traits of other slots.)

Lawful Good – RegisRegis - Lawful Good - Witcher 3 morality alignment chart

This alignment represents someone who believes in doing the right thing while also respecting a strict code of honor and moral structure. Regis is a higher vampire who lives more morally and ethically than most humans. He believes in peace, self-control, and has also learnt to control his urge for drinking blood. His sense of duty and redemption makes him the perfect example of someone who is both moral and principled. Despite being a vampire, he chooses good over instinct every time.

Neutral Good – Geralt of Rivia

Geralt- Neutral Good - Witcher 3 morality alignment chart

Neutral Good characters do the right thing based on personal morals. They do not strictly follow laws, nor are they entirely against the legal systems and authorities, but they focus on the great good, and on what helps others in the particular moment. Our mutated monster hunter Geralt of Rivia is a professional who tries to help the helpless while staying away from politics and ideologies (although he gets dragged into things). His choices are usually kind-hearted but grounded in realism and even he shows empathy to monsters who don’t harm humans. He refuses to be a tool of the state or any higher power, focusing only on what feels right to him in each situation.

Chaotic Good – Ciri

Chaotic Good characters want to do good for others, but they tend to be emotional and reject authority, social and legal rules, or strict rules. Ciri is the very definition of this alignment. She constantly pushes back against destiny, emperors, and even her own bloodline to protect the people she loves. Yes, she has a wild streak and often follows her emotions, but her motivations are pure. She does what she believes is right, even if it means causing chaos along the way.

Lawful Neutral – Sigismund Dijkstra

Witcher 3 morality alignment chart - Djikstra

Lawful Neutral individuals value order, rules, structure, discipline and even often their own codes above ideas of good or evil. Among Witcher 3 characters, Dijkstra, the spymaster of Redania, fits this in our Witcher 3 morality alignment chart as he believes in stability and intelligence over emotion. He is not much of moral guy and can be ruthless when needed but not out of cruelty. He wants to build a better world through strategy, information, and control. He follows his own personal law, regardless of who stands in his way.

True Neutral – Eskel

Witcher 3 morality alignment chart - Eskel

True Neutral characters often seek balance and avoid extremes. They may do good, but they are practical and care neither about structure nor they are too emotional. They usually stay out of larger moral conflicts. Among Witcher 3 characters, Eskel, Geralt’s close friend and fellow witcher, lives a quiet life focused on monster hunting and survival. He does not involve himself in politics or deep philosophical debates. He simply does his job, stays loyal to his friends, and avoids unnecessary drama. He neither craves power nor rebels against it.

Chaotic Neutral – Dettlaff van der Eretein

Detlaff - chaotic neutral

Chaotic Neutral characters are unpredictable. They follow personal feelings and often act based on impulse and emotion rather than any code or greater purpose. Dettlaff is a higher vampire consumed by grief, betrayal, and vengeance. He is not inherently evil, in fact, he can be extremely altruistic. However, his emotions drive him to extremes. After learning how his ex-lover Syanna betrayed him, he loses his trust on humans, and his actions become quite dangerous and unrestrained, which is why his personal pain causes massive collateral damage to innocent civilians. This is why he fits chaotic neutral in our Witcher 3 morality alignment chart. He is neither a villain nor a hero, just a chaotic force reacting to a cruel world.

Lawful Evil – Gaunter O’Dimm

Witcher 3 morality alignment chart - Gaunter

Lawful Evil characters exploit structure, bend/use laws and rules to achieve malevolent goals. Most lawful evil characters pursue a higher or even moral goal, but they don’t care about how they achieve it. They may honor deals, but their intentions are twisted. Gaunter O’Dimm, also known as Master Mirror, is a devil-like being who plays with contracts and souls. He never lies or breaks a promise, but everything he offers comes at a terrible cost. He is terrifying because of how calmly and legally he destroys lives. He turns law into a weapon.

Gaunter stands top on the list of the most terrifying Witcher 3 characters. You can click here to read more about Gaunter O’Dimm.

Neutral Evil – Radovid V

Witcher 3 morality alignment chart - Radovid

Neutral Evil characters are out for themselves. They care only about power or personal gain and do not follow rules unless it benefits them. Among Witcher 3 characters, Radovid, the mad king of Redania, is obsessed with control and domination. He wages war, persecutes mages, witches and even healers, and treats other people as pawns. Unlike Dijkstra, he has no vision of balance. Unlike O’Dimm, he does not even pretend to care about fairness. He is simply cruel, paranoid, and power-hungry.

Chaotic Evil – Eredin

Eredin - Chaotic Evil

Chaotic Evil characters destroy everything and everyone who is useless to them without care for laws, morality, or reason. They are usually extremely violent, selfish, and often unstoppable. This is why Eredin, leader of the Wild Hunt, falls under chaotic evil in our Witcher 3 morality alignment chart. Eredin brings destruction wherever he goes. He kills for power and invades worlds to consume their magic. There is no reasoning with him, no higher logic. He thrives on chaos, domination, and fear. He is the ultimate apocalyptic threat.

Read more about Eredin here.

Note: Gaunter O’Dimm and Eredin can be interchanged in the Witcher 3 morality alignment chart depending on how you interpret their intentions and methods. Gaunter follows strict rules and contracts but his actions are rooted in chaos and torment, as he tortures corrupt people randomly without any higher goal. This can make him arguably Chaotic Evil. Eredin, on the other hand, leads an organized military force with clear goals, showing a lawful structure despite his malevolent goals. He is willing to burn down entire worlds, but he is ultimately doing it to save his own civilization which he considers superior. So, if you weigh intention over behavior, their alignments in this Witcher 3 morality alignment chart could be swapped.
