Geralt of Rivia may be one of gaming’s greatest warriors, but even he has limits. Discover which legendary heroes he probably can’t defeat.
-Robin Bhuyan
When you think about the greatest and most likable warriors in video games, Geralt of Rivia is always close to the top of the list. The Witcher is a master swordsman, alchemist, and monster hunter who has defeated creatures and villains that would terrify most other heroes. He has slain griffins, dragons, bruxae, and even the deadly higher vampire Dettlaff, in Witcher 3 Blood and Wine, proving himself as one of gaming’s most dangerous protagonists. But no matter how skilled he is, there are certain characters whose abilities are simply too overwhelming for him. Let’s look at seven iconic protagonists who would most likely defeat him in a fight.
7. Kassandra/Alexios (Assassin’s Creed Odyssey)
The heroes of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (2018), Kassandra/Alexios, are descendants of Leonidas and wielders of the powerful Spear of Leonidas, an artifact that grants them enhanced strength, speed, and stamina. Against Geralt of Rivia, this would be an extremely close match. The Spartan warriors are superhuman and nearly god-level thanks to their Isu bloodline and can withstand blows that would kill most mortals. However, Geralt’s mastery of alchemy, Signs, and his years of fighting monsters give him an edge. In the end, he does have a small chance of pulling off a win, but realistically, it is unlikely.
6. Spider-Man (Marvel’s Spider-Man)
Next up is Spider-Man from Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) and Spider-Man 2 (2023), everyone’s friendly neighborhood superhero. As powerful as Geralt of Rivia is with his Witcher training, Spider-Man’s agility, reflexes, his ability to swing, and his enhanced strength make him a nightmare matchup. The Spider-Sense alone would ensure Geralt never lands a blow, as every strike would be anticipated. Spider-Man also possesses incredible durability, tanking explosions and hits that would crush normal humans. In terms of raw popularity, he is also one of the most recognizable video game heroes thanks to Insomniac’s blockbuster title. While Geralt is skilled with swords and Signs, Spider-Man’s speed and superhuman edge make him nearly unbeatable in this duel.
5. Bayonetta (Bayonetta)
The battle between Geralt of Rivia and Bayonetta from the 2017 title of the same name would be more than just swords and guns, it would be a clash of two completely different magical worlds. Bayonetta controls time with her Witch Time ability, summons massive demons, and mixes firearms with supernatural combat. Geralt has fought sorceresses before, but Bayonetta’s power level is on another plane entirely. With the ability to slow down her enemies, she could make every one of Geralt’s moves irrelevant. Add to that her stylish arsenal and sheer destructive potential, and it is clear the White Wolf would find himself completely overwhelmed in this fight.
4. Raiden (Mortal Kombat)
Facing Raiden from the popular Mortal Kombat franchise would put Geralt of Rivia up against an actual god. The Thunder God of Earthrealm wields lightning, teleports across the battlefield, and has survived countless wars against sorcerers and tyrants. Geralt’s silver sword and magic Signs look impressive when fighting monsters, but compared to Raiden’s godhood they would barely register. Raiden has the power to obliterate entire arenas with storms and has fought alongside and against beings who can destroy worlds. Geralt might be able to land a few blows thanks to his Witcher reflexes, but ultimately Raiden’s divine status makes him a fight Geralt cannot win alone.
3. Kratos (God of War)
If there is one name that makes every warrior tremble, it is Kratos from the God of War series. Also known by many as the Ghost of Sparta, Kratos has killed gods, titans, and monsters that dwarf anything in The Witcher’s world. While Geralt of Rivia has defeated terrifying beasts including a higher vampire, these are nothing compared to the feats of Kratos who has slain Zeus, Ares, Baldur, Thor, and even Odin. His sheer physical strength allows him to wrestle titans, while his arsenal of weapons like the Blades of Chaos and Leviathan Axe make him unstoppable. Geralt is a tactical fighter, but against Kratos from God of War, he is hopelessly outclassed. Unless Geralt tries to escape, the god-slayer would end their duel before it truly began.
2. Dante (Devil May Cry)
At number two is Dante (Devil May Cry), a half-demon protagonist whose power level is absurd even by video game standards. Dante regenerates from fatal wounds, slices dimensions with his sword, and teleports around enemies while juggling them in the air for minutes at a time. Geralt of Rivia is one of the most disciplined swordsmen in gaming, but Dante takes swordplay into another dimension entirely. His cocky nature means he often toys with enemies who would terrify others, and when he gets serious, entire demonic armies fall before him. Unless aided by some of his allies including Ciri, Geralt would not stand a chance against his overwhelming might.
1. Sun Wukong (Black Myth: Wukong)
C
At the very top sits Sun Wukong from Black Myth: Wukong (2024), the Monkey King himself. However, excluding the prologue, you play as The Destined One, an incarnation of Sun Wukong. Based on the legendary figure from the Chinese epic Journey to the West, this version of the monkey king brings an arsenal of magic, transformations, and unrelenting combat skill. His iconic staff can shift sizes at will, turning into a massive weapon capable of flattening entire armies. Geralt of Rivia may have fought against dragons and monsters in his world, but Sun Wukong’s immortality, shape-shifting, and sheer unpredictability make him untouchable. Against a hero of this scale, even the White Wolf would find himself hopelessly outmatched.
Final Words
This list of characters Geralt of Rivia can’t defeat is not meant to diminish the achievements of the legendary witcher. He remains one of the most legendary protagonists in gaming history, having survived countless wars, slain monsters that defy imagination, and resisted death more times than most. His story across The Witcher games shows his courage, discipline, and resourcefulness. But this list shows that even Geralt has his limits, despite being a legendary character in his universe.
Also this is not to say Geralt has no chance at all against the above. If he fought with the aid of allies like Ciri, Yennefer, and Regis, (he can even choose to ally with the powerful Gaunter O’Dimm in the game) perhaps even characters like Dante or Kratos could fall before their combined power. But singlehandedly, against these seven icons, he most likely would either struggle or has no chance.
