Love him or hate him- But you cannot ignore him- Such a name is Veer Savarkar! Despite his immense contributions to the Indian freedom struggle, this man was highly ignored by our school textbooks and majority of history books as well. Well, nobody is perfect, and even Savarkar had his flaws, but his contribution towards the Indian freedom struggle can never be undermined!
In 2001, a film titled Veer Savarkar was released, which was directed by Ved Rahi. However, as compared to the films on other freedom fighters such as Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, and Subhash Chandra Bose, the film didn’t receive much attention or popularity. Recently, a trailer was released of an upcoming film named Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, which co-written, co-produced and directed by well-known actor Randeep Hooda, who is also playing the lead role of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar in the movie. The trailer looks quite promising, and it seems that the movie will be showing that side of history which is not shown in our history books.
In a few interviews, actor Randeep Hooda has stated that although he didn’t have much knowledge regarding Veer Savarkar, he was always an admirer of the revolutionary. He also stated that he didn’t know much about Savarkar, as he thought he did, before he began working on the project. The film, according to him, is a tribute towards the contributions of Savarkar, which has influenced him to a great extent. Although it was alleged that there is political motive behind the film, as it is releasing just before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Randeep Hooda has denied any such motive, and has said that the only reason film is releasing now is because other dates didn’t work out.
However, just two days after the release of the trailer, it has been revealed by sources that Randeep Hooda is set to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. According to sources within the BJP, there is a growing speculation that actor Randeep Hooda is trying to make his mark in politics, through the upcoming Lok Sabha elections of 2024.
This sets an important question – Is the movie on Savarkar really inspired by Randeep Hooda’s admiration for the revolutionary, or is it another political strategy? While the trailer has not disappointed the audiences, it is definitely not the most ethical move to use the name of a freedom fighter for one’s own political benefit. Only time will tell if Randeep Hooda’s intentions behind the movie are genuine! Let’s wait and see!
