In Conversation with Gopinath Muthukad – Renowned Magician, Motivational Speaker and Child Rights Activist

Interviewed and written by – Reetika Choudhury

Gopinath Muthukad is an Indian magician, motivational speaker and child welfare activist from Kerala. He is the founder of The Academy of Magical Sciences, known to be the first Magical Academy in the World. He also founded the magic museum Magic Planet, at Trivandrum. His work in the field of child rights has also earned him recognition from UNICEF, and in 2022, he was honored with the Kerala Sree Award, the third highest civilian award of the State.

How did you get attracted into the world of magic?

I am originally from the northern part of Kerala, Nilambur, but I am currently settled in Trivandrum. My father was a farmer. When I was a child, my father used to tell me many inspiring stories about a legendary magician. Hearing those stories sparked a desire in me to become a magician myself. I began learning magic when I was 7 years old, and my first performance was at the age of 10. I have been in the field of magic for over 45 years.

You had performed an escape act in Harry Houdin style. Can you tell us what inspired you for it?

During that time, I faced a significant challenge because magic was not popular in Kerala, making it very difficult for us to secure a stage. I spent much of my time traveling around Kerala, approaching secretaries and presidents of various fine arts societies, only to be rejected every time. I felt completely disheartened. Eventually, I discontinued my studies in Bangalore and returned to my village with a determination to become a renowned magician. At that time, my father and I were not on good terms. One day, while feeling despondent, I came across a precious book titled ‘Secrets of Houdini.’ As I delved into its pages, I gained insights into performing escape acts. Inspired by what I learned, in 1995, I performed the most dangerous Fire Escape Act in Trivandrum. That performance marked a significant turning point in my career.

As a magician, do you think all magic is just an illusion? Or do you believe in existence of the supernatural?

Magic is inherently an art form intricately connected to various disciplines such as physics, chemistry, and psychology. As magicians, we utilize tricks that are grounded in our understanding of these sciences. It’s important to clarify that we possess no supernatural powers; rather, we are human beings skilled in this craft. When we perform, we are not creating or making objects disappear. Instead, everything remains present, and we simply manipulate perceptions through sleight of hand techniques.

Many people claim to have had supernatural experiences. How do you explain them in a logical way?

It’s important to acknowledge that magic does not involve any supernatural powers. Magicians perform illusions such as making something appear and vanishing acts, utilizing skills and techniques rather than relying on supernatural abilities. However, there exists a darker aspect within the realm of magic where individuals falsely claim to possess divine or supernatural powers. This deception misleads others and tarnishes the genuine art of magic.

Tell us how you were inspired to start the Academy of Magic Sciences?

The idea for the Academy of Magical Sciences originated from the late Malayatto Ramakrishnan, a prominent figure in Kerala and a former I.A.S. officer. Established in 1996, the Academy is a charitable institution with the aim of promoting the understanding that magic is a science devoid of supernatural powers. Its mission is to train individuals genuinely interested in learning magic. Over the past 27 years since its inception, the Academy of Magical Sciences has made significant strides. It has been recognized by the Kerala University, which now offers approved certificate and diploma courses in magic through the Academy.”

How do you think the digital media has impacted the world of magic? Do you think it has helped magicians or has it negatively impacted magic?

Some individuals are divulging the secrets of magic through digital platforms like YouTube and Facebook, which poses a significant risk to the art. Additionally, on TV shows, some magicians wear masks while exposing the inner workings of magic tricks. While there is a positive aspect to this, as it leads to the identification and introduction of new tricks, it also presents a challenge to the integrity of magic. On one hand, there is the act of revealing, and on the other, there is the act of creation. However, the act of revealing secrets to the common public is detrimental to the art of magic and undermines its essence.

You also have been actively working for child rights. Tell us a bit about it.

I have been selected as the brand ambassador for the ‘Child-friendly Kerala’ project by UNICEF, aimed at spreading awareness about child rights among the general public. Together, we are working on various initiatives to address the issues faced by children in Kerala. Through social media, I am advocating for the protection and well-being of our children, emphasizing the importance of positive actions towards them.

What are the most important steps that the government needs to take to stop child abuse?

In Kerala, there is already a good level of awareness among the people, and although India’s laws may not be as stringent as those in other countries, they still play a vital role. Children are inherently innocent and vulnerable, making them susceptible to exploitation and abuse. Therefore, it is imperative for the government to implement robust legislation to safeguard their rights and prevent such atrocities from occurring. By enacting powerful laws, we can ensure the protection and safety of our children.

Sometimes it happens that a child is being abused by their own parent, relative, or guardian. What do you think should a child do in such cases?

There are many questions surrounding this issue, such as what to do, how to do it, and how to prevent it. First and foremost, we need to conduct an awareness campaign. We must educate people about the existing laws and advocate for stronger legislation in India to ensure widespread awareness. By strengthening the laws, we can empower people with the knowledge and resources needed to combat child abuse effectively.

Tell us how you see A.I. affecting the future. As a motivational speaker, do you look at it positively? Should youth be worried about losing jobs?

I don’t know much about A.I., and I’m not familiar with it. I believe that someday it will positively impact our lives, while on other days, it may be a concern for the future of the world. But, since I lack sufficient knowledge about it, I prefer not to offer any opinions on the matter.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently dedicated to working with differently abled children. Having retired from magic some years ago, I now focus on their upliftment and generating new ideas for societal contributions. Additionally, I manage the Different Arts Centre and serve as its executive director. At the Different Arts Centre, we cater to 200 special children with various disabilities, providing them with opportunities to showcase their talents. Every day, visitors come to see the Magic Planet and often visit the Art Center to see the abilities of those children. Their appreciation motivates the children, encouraging them to continue pursuing their talents.
